Choosing Healthy Snack Alternatives on the Go

With the fast-paced lifestyle that college often brings, it’s easy to get into the habit of eating the easy choices when they’re available, whether it’s fries in Krasa or the wings basket in Coal Ben. Even though these things are super easy to just get and go, there are lots of other options that are a lot healthier! Krasa typically has fresh oranges and apples—red and green—and occasionally other fruits. The salad bar is a super easy way to get in a healthy snack with the rest of your meal, but if you’re in a hurry, you can pile a to-go box full with your favorite salad and grab a couple of the cups and lids by the ketchup and mustard to put your dressing in.

Although it is hard to turn down these tasty treats in favor of something a little less satisfying for your taste buds, it is easy to stay on track. If you would like to see more fruits offered in Krasa, talk to Frank in the Eagle’s Nest on the second floor of Krasa and he can help keep track of what the students want. You can also purchase some of your own produce for your room, it is super easy to separate a bundle of grapes into snack-sized ziplock bags, throw them into your mini-fridge, and grab one on the way to class. You can do this with apples, oranges, bananas, and any other fruit or vegetable you like! Most teachers don’t mind a little snacking in class as long as it isn’t distracting or messy.

In Coal Ben, several healthy choices can be picked out from the menu of deliciously greasy options, no matter what time of day it is. For breakfast, there is a delicious oatmeal offered that is health-smart, a breakfast burrito that offers green peppers and tomatoes, and even the yummy pancakes are only 210 calories! After 11, you can get one of the various salads that are offered, or try one of the wraps that are filled with yummy veggies like tomatoes, lettuce, or even cucumbers, or you can opt for my favorite: create your own sub sandwich. This offers a way in which you chose the type of bread and meat and can add any of the cheeses, toppings, and sauces you would like, as well as whether or not you would like to have the sub toasted. There are also new specials offered every month, and this month we have the Vegetable Pasta Primavera, the Brazilian Chicken Sub, and even the yummy Artichoke and Spinach dip. And don’t forget about the yogurt parfait and the fruit cup that you can pick up here and in the café!

One thing that is essential to remember is that you don’t always have to eat the perfectly balanced healthy meal. It’s OKAY to have a cheat day where you grab a slice of pizza, fries, a brownie, or all three if you’d like! Never hesitate to indulge a little bit on your favorite foods throughout the week, because you don’t want your hard work to be ruined on the weekend because your resolve breaks when you see the menu at Coal Ben on Saturday.
