Just because you are at college, does not mean that you have to give in to the many things that are associated with college students. Going out to parties, drinking and staying up for days without sleep, we’ve all heard of students going to the extreme to have a good time at school. But that does not have to be you. Many students are pressured into doing things that they would have not done if it were not for their friends pushing them. So many students think that in order to be “cool”, one has to do what others are doing, even if that thing is not what they want, or illegal.
Underage drinking is just one of the many things students are pressured into doing. You should not feel that you have to do anything that you do not want to. If you are uncomfortable with a situation, remove yourself from it and the people around you. You may not want to at the time out of fear of being made fun of or being an “outcast”, but in the long run you walking away will be very beneficial to you. Whatever it is that you are being pressured into doing it is important that you are able to make decisions for yourself when you know that something is wrong or out of character for you. When and if you decide not to give in to the act your friends may question you and that is fine. If they are pressuring you to do something that you do not want to do than they are not your real friends. Surrounding yourself with people that will choose to do the right thing will help eliminate the possibility of getting involved with something that you do not want to.
College is about growing up and making decisions for yourself. A part of growing up is knowing what can potentially be detrimental to you and your college career. Not giving in to peer pressure while at school is very beneficial to students. Peer pressure is not always a bad thing, but when used to get students to do something that they would not normally do it can do more harm than good. It is very good to have personal goals and limits on yourself so you are less likely to give in to peer pressure while at school.
